Contraindications to Doxycycline
Absolute Contraindications
● Pregnancy or breastfeeding due to teratogenicity and permanent teeth discoloration after
in-utero exposure
● Allergy to tetracycline antibiotics
● Use with penicillin or isotretinoin
Relative Contraindications
● Liver disease due to rare fatal hepatotoxicity
● History of yeast infections
● Recent colitis caused by antibiotic use
● Kidney disease
● diarrhea from C. Dificile
● History of lupus (autoimmune)
● Porphyria (a blood disease)
● Myasthenia gravis
Considerations:
● Some people would rather not take a medicine every day
● For trips of short duration, some people would rather not take medication for 4 weeks
after travel
● Women prone to getting vaginal yeast infections when taking antibiotics may prefer
taking a different medicine
● Persons planning on considerable sun exposure may want to avoid the increased risk of
sun sensitivity
● Some people are concerned about the potential of getting an upset stomach from
doxycycline
● People taking the common bloodthinning medicine called Coumadin (Warfarin) may be
at an increased risk for bleeding if they take doxycycline
