Contraindications to Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone)

-Pregnant women
-Breastfeeding women who are nursing infants less than 5kg
-Patients with severe kidney disease

Precaution: people taking the common blood-thinning medicine called Coumadin may
be at an increased risk for bleeding if they take atovaquone-proguanil. The Coumadin
dose can be adjusted allowing you to take both medicines safely.

Considerations:
Tends to be more expensive than some of the other options (especially for trips of long
duration)
Some people would rather not take a medicine every day
