Let’s Discuss Hepatitis A Immunoglobulin
Hepatitis A Immunoglobulin (IG) is a concentrated dose of human antibodies
from the plasma of screened donors. It offers short-term passive immunity
protection against Hepatitis A for travelers to high-risk areas.
Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, are immunocompromised,
or have chronic medical conditions, especially liver disease, who plan to visit a
risk area in less than 2 weeks should receive both the initial dose of the
Hepatitis A vaccine and Hepatitis A immune globulin at the same time.
Hepatitis A Immunoglobulin does need a prescription.
Contraindications to Hepatitis A Immunoglobulin:
● IgA Deficiency
● A history of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose
of immunoglobulin
Precautions:
● Moderate to severe illness: patients should wait until they recover. Mild
illness, such as a cold, is not a precaution.
